A Study on the Peer Support Experience of People with Psychiatric disabili

Abstract
Peer support is one of the most important elements in the recovery of people with psychiatric disabilities. This study conducted phenomenological research in order to understand the meaning of the peer support experiences by the people with psychiatric disabilities. The study selected 12 people who had peer support experiences for more than 5 months and conducted an in-depth interview. From the analysis, the study deducted four essence of peer support experience, such as ``establishing relationships through the so-called misery-loves-company,`` ``open-mindedness to peer,`` ``not as a patient but as an peer support provider,`` and ``process of self-recovery`` and 12 sub-themes. To the participants, peer support experiences were the processes of self-recovery that enhanced self-understanding and self-reliance through the performing roles and having the misery-loves-company relationships with peers. The results of this study demonstrated the implications of peer support for recovery and provided practical suggestions for their dissemination.
